Jack Slater is an action-film hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. An old projectionist (Robert Prosky) hands a magic movie ticket to Jack’s biggest preteen fan (Austin O’Brien), and the kid steps right inside the latest Jack Slater film, becoming the actor star’s sidekick in gunfights and car chases. But when Jack’s nemesis (Charles Dance) gets his hands on the ticket, the fight busts out into the real world and Jack (à la Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear) refuses to believe he’s a fictional character. Director John McTiernan churns some nifty scenes out of this setup, although the fiction-to-reality shuffle is not as deft as in, say, Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo, and the plot needs the kind of logic and discipline found in that classic when-worlds-collide film Back to the Future. Still, Schwarzenegger has moments of wit and smashing action, and we get a faux-movie trailer advertising an intriguing new shoot-’em-up: “Something’s rotten in the State of Denmark–and Hamlet is taking out the trash!”

Short 1: Invention represents the first comprehensive attempt to compile multimedia content on DVD in a magazine-like format, and it’s a welcome addition to the digital realm. Originally released on the defunct Polygram label as Short Cinema Journal, Vol. 1, the first installment in the Short series is an above-average mix of documentary, animation, and live-action shorts, even if several of the entries are nearly a decade old. The DVD is divided into six topics–”Marquee”; “Hello, Dali”; “Reality”; “Sound Bit”; “Minutes”; and “Junkdrawer”–the best highlights are to be found in “Hello, Dali,” “Reality,” and “Minutes,” which contain interesting, even brilliant, bits. The excerpt from Shape Without Form is a surreal, four-minute exercise in angst and it shares a slot with the most noteworthy discovery on the DVD, the creative and ingenious Will Vinton-produced Mr. Resistor, which is a cleverly animated, Road Warrior-like ride through the electrical world. In the “Minutes” chapter, British director Michael Apted discusses the premise that “film is the poetry of ordinary life,” and although eight minutes can’t begin to cover a director’s career, this segment does its expurgated best. There are segments from the Ron Fricke film Baraka (also available as a full-length DVD), which still dazzles after nearly two decades with its austere lesson in nature and humanity. Black Rider is an Oscar-winning German short that chronicles a black man’s plight on a tram, with a delightful twist ending. A slight disappointment, George Hickenlooper’s Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade is the original short that inspired Billy Bob Thornton’s acclaimed feature film version, and it pales in comparison. Likewise, Henry Rollins’s Easter Sunday in NYC is little more than an angry, pointless, and dated rant for misfits everywhere. Some of the films–like the clay-animated movie spoof The Big Story, featuring Frank Gorshin’s hilarious impression of Kirk Douglas–are sure to please those who never saw them on the film festival circuit. On the whole, the good outweighs the mediocre in this deft compilation, boding well for subsequent volumes in the series. –Paula Nechak

Summary of Movie

For much of its running time, High Tension earns its title as a gory and suspenseful tale of hot pursuit. Originally titled Switchblade Romance in England, and trimmed of its most excessive gore to avoid an NC-17 rating during its brief U.S. theatrical release, this French horror film provokes a memorable case of high anxiety from its alluring female lead (Cecile de France), but it’s an otherwise brainless exercise with a ludicrous conclusion that renders the entire film null and void. It’s essentially a Texas Chainsaw wanna-be, which isn’t such a bad thing if you’re a horror buff with an appetite for gruesome death at the hands of a brutal and nameless serial killer. Dressed in greasy coveralls and a baseball cap, and driving a rusty old delivery van, the killer indiscriminately destroys an entire family before chasing after the tomboyish Marie (de France), who is trapped in a nonsensical screenplay that won’t let her go. With a high body count and buckets of bloodshed, High Tension has moments of delirious intensity, which is probably why Lion’s Gate (bolstered by the success of Saw and other horror hits) deemed the film worthy of U.S. release with some (but not all) of its French dialogue badly dubbed in English. It’s horror for die-hards only, and on those terms it’s worth a look. –Jeff Shannon

Performing in the gorgeous, historic Warner Theater in Washington, D.C., there’s an air of class about the proceedings quickly and good-naturedly undone by the quartet’s material. Bill Engvall discusses what it was like to assemble a trampoline for his kid and make a couple of discoveries while trying it out: “One, the dog doesn’t like to jump. Two, I’m 20 feet in the air, and now my high school geometry kicks in. If you jump at an angle, you bounce at the opposite angle.” He has another fond remembrance of youth: “Remember when you discovered you could burn ants with a magnifying glass? Then I saw an ant on my arm.” Ron White, with trademark drink and a smoke in hand, talks about dieting tips for clean living: “Skinny people tell you: drink a lot of water, you’ll be less hungry. You know what? Drink a lot of water, you’ll be less thirsty.” Redneck everyman Jeff Foxworthy comes armed with fashion tips for the Wal-Mart crowd: “There’s no shame in having a spare tire around your waist. Just cover it up.” He’s also got vasectomy clinic slogans you don’t want to hear: “Half-off. Everything must go.” Finally, Larry the Cable Guy continues narrating his journey through cluelessness: “I got married seven months ago. We’re already having trouble. Apparently, you can’t talk dirty to your wife’s sister.” A little sidebar about the comedians’ special trip to the White House is a cute diversion, while special features include a brisk question-and-answer session with a sharp audience. –Tom Keogh
